Street Tree Planting

4/26/2024

HAPPY ARBOR DAY!
“Other holidays repose upon the past; Arbor Day proposes for the future.”
– J. Sterling Morton.
From the beginning, the City of Lyons was called the City of Trees. In an article from the Lyons Mirror-Sun in 1970, a writer wrote their concerns about the name being “a thing of the past” as they lost a lot of trees from the Elm disease. Over the years, between disease, storms, pesty beavers, or age, our once canopy of trees has dwindled throughout town.
In 2023, 13 trees were removed, and 16 new trees were planted in their place. This year, we are in the process of planting 33 additional trees with help from the Lower Elkhorn NRD.
How can you help?
We are looking for homeowners who would like trees planted on the boulevard of their property (street trees). As we continue to seek future funding, we would like to gauge community participation. You must be willing to water and care for the tree(s). Location and variety would be based on ordinance and utility restrictions.
Please fill out the attached form , but note that filling out the form does not guarantee a tree will be planted on your property
